In golf putting is the name of the game. If you want to quickly reduce your golf handicap, improve your putting. How do you do that? Most experts agree that if you’re serious about improving your putting, you’ll “immerse” yourself in the effort—take golf lessons, read golf tips, and practice as much as you can. They also agree that studying the pros’ putting techniques helps.

But while studying professional golfers often produces valuable golf tips, the modern style of putting may not yield the best results for weekend golfers—at least that’s the opinion of the PGA’s Tom Kite. He thinks weekend golfers shouldn’t putt like the pros at all. Instead, he advocates adopting a different technique—one that h believes can lower your golf handicap dramatically.

More Like Jones Than Woods

Here’s Kite’s theory: Over the years putting has evolved. It’s gone from the wristy stroke of Bobby Jones to the arm-and-shoulder stroke of Tiger Woods. The arm-and-shoulder stroke is fine for professionals, who play on fast, smooth greens and under great pressure. The arm-and-shoulder stroke is highly effective here. It provides control over the putt and also eliminates the influence of the wrists’ smaller muscles. These can twitch when under pressure, causing mistakes.

But the modern stroke may not be right for weekend golfers, who play on slower, bumpier greens and under less pressure. That’s because of two reasons: First, since the modern stroke is longer, it’s also slower. The longer and slower the stroke, the easier it is for the putterhead to go off line. You can’t sink a putt if your putterhead is off line—even if the putt’s speed and roll is perfect.

Second, since the greens weekend players play on aren’t as glass-like as those of the pros, making solid contact is imperative. Slower, bumpier greens require a firmer putt to keep the ball on line—one that can be delivered by using the wrists. A wristy stroke down plays the arms and shoulders. Also, since weekend golfers play under less pressure, they don’t have to worry about twitching.

Support From Jack Nicklaus

Support for Kite’s theory comes from one of the game’s greatest players. If you watch old footage of Jack Nicklaus, you’ll notice a big difference between his approach to putting and Tiger Woods’. Like Woods, Jack is methodical in his basic approach. He carefully studies each putt. And like Woods, he carefully goes through his pre-shot routine. But when it comes to putting the ball, Jack uses more of his wrists than Woods does.

Watching Jack, it almost seems like he “pops” the ball as opposed to stroking it—a good image to keep in your mind, if you adopt this putting style. Also, Jack makes a much shorter stroke than Woods, picking the putterhead up more abruptly and then placing it down on the ball. In fact, Jack’s stroke looks more like a jab than a stroke, with little movement of the arms and shoulders.

Keys To A Wristier Stroke

If you’re committed to changing putting styles, adopting Kite’s approach is worth considering. But you must hold two keys firmly in mind if use his approach. First, keep the blade square to the ball. In the modern stroke, the blade has a tendency to open and close in the course of the stroke. But with Kite’s approach the blade doesn’t have time to open much. In fact, keep the idea of squaring the blade to the ball as your primary swing thought.

Second, make the putter head finish on the ground. In the modern stroke the putterhead keeps moving toward the target after the ball is struck. It’s known as follow-through. It results in hitting up on the putt, causing topped or cut putts. But Kite’s approach eliminates this fault, since there’s no follow-through. Since there’s no follow-through, try hitting the bottom of the ball, not the upper half.

Kite’s idea of using a wristy putting stroke has merit. If you’re looking to improve your putting, consider it. Keep in mind that putting is the most individual of all golfing skills. So the wristier stroke may be better for you than the arm-and-shoulder stroke. But whatever you do, don’t stop taking golf lessons, reading golf tips, or practicing putting. It’s the best way to improve your putting and the quickest way to lower your golf handicap.

Well, before you take them to that park and run back and forth across the field with the kite dragging on the ground behind you, let’s review some tips about kite flying.

The first consideration should be where to fly the kite. The park may sound like a great idea, but if there are lots of trees that could be a problem. An important safety tip is to stay well clear of power lines, as well as any airports or buildings. Find a nice wide open field, or a beach is there is one nearby. Beaches also tend to have added breezes, so that is an additional bonus.

OK, so you have a place picked out, now let’s talk about getting that kite started on its flight. The running back and forth method? No, that can be a dangerous and seldom works. If you have a helper, let them stand about 80 feet downwind from you.

When there is too much wind you can add a tail to the kite, this will add stability. If the kite has an adjustable bridle you can move it higher (towards the top of the kite) to adjust for the greater wind. As you fly the kite, you want to keep gentle tension on the string. If it is pulling, let the string out a bit, if the kite string grows slack, reel some in. A good flying height is between 50- 100 feet.

As you bring the kite down for the end of its flight, reel the cord in slowly. You can walk in towards the kite as you do this, slowly reeling in. This can help slow the speed. Reach up and secure the kite before it crashes to help save it for the next flight.

SLE. Supported leading edge. You are going to hear this term at one point or another, so let’s define it now. A supported leading edge kite is any kite that has bridles attached to its leading edge. This means that Hybrid and Bow kites are both considered SLE kites, even though they are different styles of kites. A C-kite is not a SLE kite because it has no bridles.
C Shape Kites.The C- kite is the original kiteboarding kite – up until recently, this was the only kind of inflatable kite on the market. It has square corners and forms a deep C-shaped arc when flying. It gets its characteristic shape from its lines, which are attached at the four corners of the kite.
5th line C- kites come equipped with an extra line that attaches to the leading edge of the kite. This line helps the rider re-launch the kite from the water, and it acts as an additional safety system to de-power the kite. An important note about the 5th line is that it does not carry any tension when the kite is in flight – it is simply used to help de-power and re-launch. Since this line carries no tension, the shape of a 5th line C- kite is exactly the same as a classic C- kite, and all performance characteristics remain the same (except the de-power and re-launch).Some Hybrid kites have a line that looks identical to a C- kites 5th line, but the difference is that it is under tension. On a Hybrid, this line can be used to hold the kite in a different shape than a normal C- kite can have, which opens up a whole new range of design possibilities that affect kite performance. This is why a C-kites 5th line isn’t under tension – the moment it is, the kite becomes a Hybrid.
Hybrid.The Hybrid kiteboarding kite was developed in order to merge the benefits of C and Bow kites into one kite. Since hybrids are a fusion of two different styles of kites, their specific design can vary greatly – some are almost identical to C-kites, others are similar to Bow kites, and the rest fall somewhere in between.

Bow style hybrid.This style of hybrid kite generally tends to be more bow-like, without actually being a bow kite. It has more complicated bridles and can vary widely in shape and profile. Sometimes the only thing keeping this kind of kite from being a Bow kite is the shape of the trailing edge (yes, this difference in shape is enough to have drastic performance differences.) Like the C kite, the Hybrids design gives it unique flying characteristics
Bow Kite.This style of kiteboarding kite is one of the newest styles on the market. Its defining characteristic is the shape of the trailing edge, which is concave. Because of this kites unique shape it looks much flatter when it flies, and is why this type of kite is sometimes called a ‘flat‘ kite. In addition, the shape of this kite is what gives it it’s near 100% de-power and large wind range. Like the Hybrid kite, the bow style kiteboarding kite has bridles that attach to its leading edge. These bridles are necessary to help hold the kite in its flat shape – without them, the wind would force the kite into a sharp curve, just like a C- kite.

A kite is a flying tethered aircraft that depends upon the tension of a tethering system.[1] The necessary lift that makes the kite wing fly is generated when air (or in some cases water)[2][3][4] flows over and under the kite’s wing, producing low pressure above the wing and high pressure below it. This deflection also generates horizontal drag along the direction of the wind. The resultant force vector from the lift and drag force components is opposed by the tension of the one or more lines or tethers.[5] The anchor point of the kite line may be static or moving (e.g., the towing of a kite by a running person, boat,[6] or vehicle).[7][8]

Kites are usually heavier-than-air, but there is a second category of lighter-than-air kite called a kytoon which may be filled with hydrogen, hot air, methane, or helium; these stay aloft with or without wind; at calm they float; at wind they receive lift from buoyancy and aerodynamic lift. Kytoons were develop strongly by Domina Jalbert. Kytoons have been made in toy-scale as well as military large scale.[9][10]

Kites may be flown for recreation, art or other practical uses. Sport kites can be flown in aerial ballet, sometimes as part of a competition. Power kites are multi-line steerable kites designed to generate large forces which can be used to power activities such as kite surfing, kite landboarding, kite buggying and a new trend snow kiting. Kites towed behind boats can lift passengers[11] which has had useful military applications in the past.[12]

Kites were used approximately 2,800 years ago in China[13], where materials ideal for kite building were readily available: silk fabric for sail material, fine, high-tensile-strength silk for flying line, and resilient bamboo for a strong, lightweight framework. Alternatively, the kite authors Clive Hart and Tal Streeter hold that leaf kites existed far before that time in what is now Indonesia, based on their interpretation of cave paintings on Muna Island off Sulawesi.[14] The kite was said to be the invention of the famous 5th century BC Chinese philosophers Mozi and Lu Ban. By at least 549 AD paper kites were being flown, as it was recorded in that year a paper kite was used as a message for a rescue mission.[15] Ancient and medieval Chinese sources list other uses of kites for measuring distances, testing the wind, lifting men, signaling, and communication for military operations.[15] The earliest known Chinese kites were flat (not bowed) and often rectangular. Later, tailless kites incorporated a stabilizing bowline. Kites were decorated with mythological motifs and legendary figures; some were fitted with strings and whistles to make musical sounds while flying.[16] In 1750, Benjamin Franklin published a proposal for an experiment to prove that lightning is electricity by flying a kite in a storm that appeared capable of becoming a lightning storm. Benjamin Franklin wisely never performed his experiment, but on May 10, 1752, Thomas-François Dalibard of France conducted Franklin’s experiment (using a 40-foot (12 m)-tall iron rod instead of a kite) and extracted electrical sparks from a cloud.[17][18]

The period from 1860 to about 1910 became the “golden age of kiting”. Kites started to be used for scientific purposes, especially in meteorology, aeronautics, wireless communications and photography; reliable manned kites were developed as well as power kites. Invention of powered airplane diminished interest in kites.World War II saw a limited use of kites for military purposes (see Focke Achgelis Fa 330 for example). The “Visual Therapy Sky Mural” is a child’s dreamscape of a Pacific sky and sandy beach that runs the length of the 26-foot ceiling and continues onto the side wall. The ceiling is adorned with a beautiful arrangement of butterfly kites, ship kites and airplane kites that complement the mural. The results are stunning. School teacher and librarians are using kites for special projects and displays. This year insects, butterflies and birds have been big hits. The kites make teaching and learning fun. Aquariums use a variety of fish kites to highlight their themes. Imagine numerous Angel Fish Kites, Orca Whale Kites, Dolphin Kites, and even Octopus Kites decorating a major aquarium lobby. It really is impressive. Grocery stores have even used kites as decoration. Hand painted Bali Butterfly Kites are stunning when used as wall art. Customers love to have the added touch of color during their shopping experience. The Bali Butterfly kites are available in several colors and the wing spans up to seven feet.
